Well, not too many people remember it these days. It only lasted a season before being axed by Fox, that perennial executioner of groundbreaking TV.
In fact, it was one of the first shows Fox canceled before its time — preceding the unceremonious axings of Firefly , Freaks and Geeks , and Arrested Development. What they came up with was, like Indy , an homage to the no-budget adventure serials of the s. Brisco was set in the s, the waning days of the Old West. It starred Bruce Campbell currently kicking deadite ass on Ash vs.
Evil Dead as the titular hero, a lawyer-turned-bounty-hunter. And it was, for the brief moment it was on the air, one of the best shows on television.
It was a western, yes, but it had a heavy science-fiction influence if Firefly was a western-infused sci-fi, I guess Brisco would be a sci-fi infused western. It was set in , but contained knowing winks to 20 th -Century pop culture. Was it an action show with broad, lunatic comedy — or a comedy with some of the best action sequences on TV?
The only thing Brisco is comparable to, ultimately, is itself. But it was fantastic. Bruce Campbell, of course, was reliably superb. Fox has proven time and again that critical acclaim for a show might as well be a bucket of unicorn horns for all the good it does to keep a show on the air. That said, the acclaim is probably the only reason Fox even stuck with Arrested Development for 3 seasons — or 2-and-a-half seasons, really — instead of immediately canceling the incredibly dense and joke-packed story about a large family that could do almost nothing right beyond making people laugh.
Much thanks to Netflix for later saving it. If only TV audiences knew in what we know now. It happened first with Dead Like Me , and then came the fantastically fantastic Wonderfalls , in which an everyday girl in a crap job talks to animal figurines and attempts to woo a married man. And what did Fox do to prove its dedication to the show? Switched the night it aired after one episode and canceled it after four episodes.
Thankfully, the DVDs are out there with all 13 quirky and sometimes touching. Could this list exist without Firefly on it? The silver lining here is that Season 1 was 27 episodes, which is far more than most shows got. It did win an Emmy for writing, though.
Why was it so great? So much comedy gold, and so little to show for it, Fox. Between them, they would go on to direct dozens of episodes of the adventures of Scully and Mulder, and Manners would even go on to produce Supernatural.
He served as the showrunner of Lost! Written by Randy Edelman, it has become the main music for sporting events on the NBC network, including being prominently featured in their Olympics coverage. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. It could not be more different to our current era of bleak shows and dark anti-heroes. A quick search on YouTube also reveals many clips, reviews, and reactions. Good luck, and I hope that you are able to find and see this underappreciated show!
